PONCA CITY? After playing crisp, turnover-free football in recent weeks, Bixby High?s No. 1-ranked Spartans battled one obstacle after another here Friday night during Ponca City?s homecoming celebration at Sullins Field.
It was a lengthy Class 6AII, District 2 game that featured a barrage of yellow flags thrown by the officials that prevented the Spartans from getting into any kind of rhythm from start to finish. It was a grind from start to finish. It was a night when Bixby would take two steps forward and one step backward.
Bixby was flagged a season-high 17 times for 200 yards. Ponca City was flagged nine times for 105 yards. Incredibly, that?s 26 combined penalties for 305 total yards. In addition, the Spartans turned the ball over twice after playing the last three games without a turnover.
?We had a couple of things set us back, but we overcame a lot of
obstacles tonight and got the win,?said senior receiver/defensive
back Clayton Barbour,
who caught four passes
for 71 yards and one
definitely didn?t take
them lightly ? we knew
they had good athletes
and that anything can
happen in a game. We
just need to get better
as a team.?
